Professional statement

Durrell Sheppard, LCSW, works with children, teens, adults, and couples navigating trauma, ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and relationship stress. He is known for his non-judgmental, direct, and straightforward approach, creating a safe space where clients feel both supported and challenged to grow.

Durrell draws on evidence-based practices such as CBT and DBT, while also incorporating mindfulness and creative coping strategies. He believes therapy should be clear, practical, and compassionate, helping clients uncover root issues, build resilience, and strengthen their personal and professional relationships.

In addition to his clinical work, Durrell is a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP), a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional for Children & Adolescents (CCATP-CA), and a final-year PhD student in Integrative Social Work at Saybrook University. He has extensive experience supporting clients in trauma recovery and substance use, and he brings valuable leadership knowledge from his role directing clinical and community wellness programs.

Better Communities Counseling, where Durrell practices alongside a team of highly trained clinicians, is based in Oak Park, Illinois. Sessions are available both in-person and virtually, and the practice accepts all major PPO plans, some managed Medicaid plans, and private pay options to ensure care is accessible.

Message to clients

Starting therapy is a brave step, and I want you to know that you don’t have to do it alone. My goal is to create a space where you feel safe, respected, and understood. I believe in being direct and straightforward while also bringing compassion and care into every session.

I work with children, teens, adults, and couples facing challenges like trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, general stress, and career concerns. Together, we’ll explore not just what’s difficult, but also your strengths, so you can build resilience and move toward lasting change.

My hope for you is that therapy becomes a place where you feel empowered — where you can show up as yourself, process openly without judgment, and take practical steps toward the life you want.
