Dr. Emily Maher is a Providence-based licensed clinical psychologist working with adults and couples. She sees Rhode Island clients both in-person and virtually and also offers virtual therapy to clients around the country. Dr. Maher specializes in treating trauma, anxiety disorders, and insomnia as well as accompanying clients through life changes such as grief, perinatal issues, transition to parenthood, and navigating shifting life stages. She also works with couples confronting relationship distress, or who simply wish to strengthen their connection.
Dr. Maher’s therapeutic approach is grounded in acceptance-based behavior therapies, especially Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for individuals and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) for couples. These evidence-based approaches can be particularly helpful for clients moving through complex, overwhelming life experiences. Dr. Maher helps clients to develop a compassionate, clear-eyed understanding of the patterns keeping them stuck and to shift their relationships to the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that perpetuate their suffering. Her approach is structured, collaborative, and focused on meaningful change–on moving you toward the life you want to live.
Many of Dr. Maher’s clients come to therapy wishing to process and move forward following trauma, whether recent or in the distant past. Dr. Maher has received specialized training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE), two evidence-based approaches for treating post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Maher also offers brief, targeted treatment for clients struggling with insomnia. She has obtained specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), which outperforms all other interventions–including medication–for providing long-term relief from insomnia.
