Professional statement

Dr. Katzen is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Rhode Island, offering both in-person and online therapy to adults and couples. He specializes in helping individuals navigate issues such as shame, self-criticism, depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, and unhealthy habits. Dr. Katzen also works with couples on enhancing communication, improving dynamics, and addressing marital conflict. Dr. Katzen has extensive training in evidence-based practices, including Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Dr. Katzen's approach centers on creating a space that feels steady, supportive, and grounded—where clients can show up just as they are and begin to explore the experiences, thoughts, or emotions that have felt hard to navigate. He works with clients to improve insight, develop practical tools, and work through the challenges that may be keeping them stuck. With time and support, clients will strengthen their resilience, reconnect with what matters most, and take steps toward a life that feels more authentic, balanced, and fulfilling.

When working with couples, he uses Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT), which is an evidence based couples therapy that combines behavioral work and helps to facilitate greater acceptance. IBCT aims to help partners better understand and navigate their differences with more empathy and less reactivity. It’s about deepening connection, improving communication, and creating a more loving, authentic partnership.

Message to clients

Compassion is at the heart of everything I do. I believe real change begins when we can meet ourselves—and our struggles—with gentleness and understanding. So much healing becomes possible when we turn down the volume on self-criticism and instead create space for kindness, curiosity, and growth.

Therapy, to me, is a shared journey. You bring your openness, willingness, and lived experience; I bring my clinical skills, presence, and a warm, grounded space where all parts of you are welcome. Together, we co-create a space that feels safe, steady, and supportive—where you don’t have to go it alone.

Once that foundation of compassion and trust is in place, I draw from a blend of evidence-based approaches to support meaningful, lasting change. I also integrate trauma-processing techniques to gently support healing from past wounds and to help build resilience moving forward.

My hope is that our work helps you feel more connected to yourself and your values, more flexible in how you respond to life’s challenges, and more empowered to move forward with clarity and intention.
