Professional statement

Isolde Sundet is a licensed psychodynamic psychotherapist and published researcher with over a decade of clinical experience working with individuals and couples. She specializes in helping people who grew up in dysfunctional or narcissistic families — particularly those whose relationship with a parent has left them struggling with self-doubt, perfectionism, difficulty knowing what they want, or a persistent sense that something in their relationships is off, even when they can't quite name it.

Isolde's approach is depth-oriented and collaborative. She is more interested in understanding the root of what's driving a pattern than in offering quick fixes or prescriptive methods. She works with clients who are, by most measures, high-functioning — but who carry something privately that has never fully been addressed. Her clinical background includes forensic settings in New York City, couples therapy, and work with compulsive behavior and addiction. She trained at Columbia University and holds advanced certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT-C).

Isolde offers a free 20-minute consultation for those considering beginning work together.

Message to clients

The patterns in your relationships didn't start with you — but they can end with you. If you've spent years feeling responsible for other people's emotions, second-guessing yourself, or wondering why relationships feel harder than they should despite everything else going well in your life, you're in the right place. Much of what brings people to my practice has roots in their earliest relationships — with parents, caregivers, and family — and those roots run deeper than most people realize.

I am not here only to listen. My job is to show you what you might not see yet — to help you understand what's been driving your patterns so that you can finally start making the choices you actually want to make, rather than the ones that were handed to you. I work collaboratively, which means we identify your goals together and figure out what real progress looks like for you specifically. I'm more interested in the why beneath your experience than in offering prescriptive, cookie-cutter methods.

If something has been bothering you — a relationship, a recurring feeling, a nagging sense that something isn't right — now is the time to act. I believe life is best when we take risks, and beginning therapy is one of the most meaningful risks you can take. I look forward to meeting you.
