Joel Kosman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in working with professionals, including many lawyers, navigating stress, anxiety, and career transitions. Many of his clients are functioning at a high level but find that the pressures of their work are beginning to affect how they think, feel, and relate to others.
In his work with individuals and couples, Joel focuses on helping clients better understand the patterns shaping their experience and develop more flexibility in how they respond. Rather than applying a fixed set of techniques, he works collaboratively with each client to clarify what is happening in their day-to-day life and how they would like to approach it differently. This often includes looking at how stress, anxiety, and relationship dynamics unfold in real time, as well as how longer-standing patterns may be contributing to current difficulties.
Joel brings a dual background in law and mental health to his practice. Before becoming a psychotherapist, he practiced law for more than twenty years in a variety of settings, including private practice and as an Assistant District Attorney. Although he found much of the work engaging, over time it became less and less of a fit, as the parts of himself he most wanted to engage were less central to his day-to-day work. That experience informs his work with professionals who are questioning the direction of their own careers or trying to navigate demanding roles more sustainably.
He received both his J.D. and Master’s in Social Work from New York University. He has advanced psychoanalytic training from the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy and additional training in the treatment of eating disorders and substance use. He has also worked extensively with law students and early-career professionals.
Joel offers remote therapy for adults throughout New York.
