Professional statement

Susan Haarman, LCPC, works with adults and couples who are tired of carrying things alone. Many of her clients are navigating anxiety, depression, grief, identity questions, or seasons of significant change, and a good number come to her because they want a therapist who will not flinch at the fullest version of who they are. As a queer therapist, she keeps her practice explicitly affirming of LGBTQ+ clients and is openly kink affirming and poly and ENM affirming. She brings a trauma informed lens to all of it, and welcomes the games, fandoms, and stories her clients love into the work. She sees adults only.

Her approach is client centered and draws heavily on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which at its heart is about helping people make clear, meaningful choices about their own lives rather than feeling pushed around by anxiety, old patterns, or other people's expectations. Susan believes therapy should be honest before it is anything else. She is not interested in simply nodding along, and pairs that candor with real warmth and a sense of humor, so clients feel both supported and gently challenged toward the growth they came in looking for.

Susan earned her Masters in Community Counseling from Loyola University Chicago and is licensed in Illinois. She also holds training in spiritual direction and mediation, which she draws on when it serves her clients. She sees clients through Psychotherapy Associates of Chicago.

Her practice is fully virtual, serving clients across Illinois by secure video, with evening and weekend availability. She accepts insurance, offers a sliding scale for those who may be eligible, and begins with a free consultation, because fit matters more than almost anything else here.

Message to clients

If you're reading this, you've probably been turning the idea of therapy over for a while, and I want you to know that deciding to reach out is genuinely one of the hardest parts. You don't have to arrive with it all figured out, or know exactly what's wrong, or be able to name what you want. You just have to show up. From there, we figure it out together.

A few things worth knowing about me before we start. I'm honest, sometimes more honest than a polite nod, because I think you deserve a therapist who is actually in your corner rather than one who just agrees with you. I also believe the work goes better with some warmth and a little humor along the way. Whoever you are and however you love, you can bring your whole self into the room without having to translate or explain yourself first.

My hope for you is pretty simple. I want you to walk out of this feeling more grounded, more like yourself, and more able to move toward the things that actually matter to you. You don't have to figure it all out alone, and you don't have to do it without laughing sometimes either.
