Professional statement

April Lau, LMHC is an expert therapist (CBT, ACT, EFT, couples) who believes most of us need a lot more human connection and that society isn't set up well to support that. She helps people move past "We're not compatible," "it's always been this way," and "I'm just that kind of person." She helps her clients develop and grow both new and existing relationships, even if when they have social anxiety or performance anxiety.

April especially likes working with people who appear successful to others but don't feel great about themselves. She understands how doubt, imposter syndrome, anxiety, and self-esteem can deprive people of a sense of worth. Many clients come in when they are not feeling like themselves or they are tired of being held back by trauma and relationship problems.

April works with couples and individuals, tweens, teens, and adults of all ages & genders . She sees students, people in all stages of their careers, and clients in retirement.

April is excited to help you find your worth, connect with your abilities, and improve your relationships. She puts her clients at ease quickly; clients often tell her they feel hopeful after their first discussion with her. As you continue working together, she’ll help you learn to do feel your emotions more easily with less discomfort. Basically, you'll create a toolbox of strategies you can use to connect to life more fully.

April is active in the Cognitive Behavioral, Acceptance and Commitment, and Emotionally Focused therapy provider communities, regularly advising other therapists and learning from colleagues. She is a mentor to new therapists. She loves playing outside, volunteering, meeting new people, and spending time with her husband, family, and friends.

Message to clients

I'm so glad you're taking the time to find a new therapist and would love to meet you. I became a therapist in part because I realized I had a knack for connecting with people pretty quickly and helping them feel understood. If you are feeling stuck and feel like it might be helpful to talk to someone, let's schedule an intake session or a intro call. During intake sessions, I help clients to talk about where they are feeling stuck and start the process of getting them unstuck. Then its totally up to you to continue therapy with me or just go with what we started with (I hope you'll continue).

My approach depends on what each client and couple need. Some people benefit most from having new experiences in session or planning out simple "experiments" to try between sessions. We can do a combo of both or try one or the other. Other people gain the most from noticing the thoughts that keep them stuck and questioning their assumptions. I've got lots of experience and am flexible in my approach to help you make changes that don't feel too scary.

However you contact me, know you'll hear a friendly voice or receive an enthusiastic email back. I return every message and can't wait to meet you. Getting started is easy and I even have same-day appt options for current clients.
