Professional statement

David Cope works with couples who find themselves stuck in recurring patterns of conflict or disconnection and want a clearer way forward. Many partners reach out when conversations escalate quickly, misunderstandings keep repeating, or emotional distance begins to grow. David helps couples slow these patterns down so both partners can feel heard and begin understanding what is happening in the relationship.

David is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who also works with individuals navigating relationship challenges, anxiety, life transitions, and questions about direction or meaning in their lives. Many people who seek his help are looking for a thoughtful, grounded approach to therapy—one that supports meaningful change while honoring their unique experiences.

A significant focus of David’s work is helping couples understand the dynamics that keep conflicts going and develop healthier ways of relating. His work draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy and other attachment-informed approaches, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, psychodynamic theory, and mindfulness-based practices. Rather than relying on a single model, he tailors therapy to the needs of each person or couple.

With more than 35 years of clinical experience, including extensive work in mediation and trauma-informed care, David brings a calm and steady presence to the therapeutic process. His mediation background has been especially valuable in helping couples navigate difficult conversations without blame, allowing both partners to better understand one another.

David provides therapy primarily through telehealth and also offers limited in-person sessions at his home-based office in New Hampshire. He works with individuals, couples, and families and is licensed in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Message to clients

Reaching out for support often takes courage, especially when you’re trying to make sense of what’s happening in your relationship or in your life. Many people come to therapy feeling uncertain about how to move forward or wanting a clearer understanding of patterns that no longer feel workable. My goal is to offer a space where you can slow down, feel heard, and begin to understand what may be getting in the way.

I work with individuals and couples who want to improve communication, navigate relationship challenges, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and one another. Whether you’re feeling stuck in recurring patterns, experiencing emotional disconnection, or facing a significant life transition, I help clients explore these experiences with curiosity, care, and openness.

My role is not to take sides or decide who is right, but to help create a space where both partners—and individuals—can reflect more clearly on what is happening and what they want moving forward.

My approach is collaborative and grounded, drawing from relational, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based perspectives. Alongside insight and self-understanding, I help clients develop practical tools for managing emotions, improving communication, and responding more thoughtfully in difficult moments.

I strive to create a calm, respectful space where meaningful conversations can unfold. My hope is that through our work together, you’ll gain clarity, strengthen your sense of direction, and feel better equipped to move forward with confidence.
